The ground

This is the broadest family and the one where geography matters least and water matters most. It runs from Baja's desert islands in the Gulf of California, through the Belize barrier reef and the Bay Islands, to the volcanic ranges of the Greater and Lesser Antilles, and out to Galápagos and Fernando de Noronha. What links them is that the sea state, not the rainfall, decides whether a day happens.

The islands split into two kinds of trip that get conflated. Some are mountain trips that happen to be surrounded by water — Pico Duarte at 3,098 m is the highest point in the Caribbean, Dominica's Boiling Lake day is the hardest hike in the Eastern Caribbean, and Cuba's Pico Turquino is a genuine cloud-forest climb. Others are water trips where the walking is incidental. Both are here, and the fitness bars are nothing alike.

This family also carries the heaviest access constraints in the catalog. Galápagos itineraries are assigned to vessels by the park on a fixed rotation, so you choose a boat and its route rather than islands. Fernando de Noronha caps the main island at roughly 11,000 visitors a month with a daily environmental tax and a separate park ticket. Cuba requires authorised-category structuring for US persons. Four of the eight inquire-only expeditions sit in this family, and that is why.

What it asks of you

Water competence over fitness

Most of these days ask you to be a confident swimmer in open water with some current, to get in and out of a small boat through surf, and to be comfortable snorkelling or diving. That is a different question from whether you can walk uphill, and it is the one that actually matters here.

The hurricane belt

June to November across the whole Caribbean basin, with peak risk August to October. It is why our reef, island, and Yucatán windows are drawn to sit outside the peak, and why weather-disruption cover is worth having rather than a formality.

Sea state, not rainfall

Northern fronts churn the Bahamas and Roatán between November and February. The Norte blows hardest in Baja from December to February and can pin a kayaking party on a beach for a day, which is normal and planned for. Noronha's outer sea suits experienced divers from December to May and unsettles everyone else.

Mandatory public fees

Some of these destinations cost real money before you have spent anything: $200 plus a $20 transit card in Galápagos, a per-day tax plus a park ticket at Noronha, marine reserve fees per diver per day in Belize and Roatán. We show them as lines rather than absorbing them quietly.

How the season works

Caribbean reef and island programmes run roughly November to May, outside the hurricane peak, with the Belize whale shark aggregations tied to the full moons of March to June. Baja paddles best in October–November and March–April, while January to March is stronger for whales and windier. Galápagos runs all year and splits into a warm, calm, wetter season from December to May and a cool garúa season from June to November with rougher crossings and much richer water. Noronha's clear window is August to December. El Salvador's Pacific swell is March to October.

How we guide it

Private dive boats and guides rather than a shared six-pack slot, crewed vessels where the chain has no infrastructure, and licensed local guides where regulation demands it — Gros Piton, Dominica's Boiling Lake, and every Galápagos landing. Marine park and reserve fees included and paid to the reserve. We do not book provisioned swim-with attractions, and we say plainly which encounters are wild and which are habituated.

Fitness bar

Mostly Easy in the water, up to Challenging on the island mountain routes — Pico Duarte, Dominica's Boiling Lake, and the Sierra Nevada corridor. Certification is required for the wall and atoll dive sites, and advanced or Nitrox helps at the deeper walls.

What to bring

Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest, and on several sites sunscreen is prohibited outright. Bring your certification card if you dive. A 3 mm suit is enough in the Caribbean; Baja in winter and the Galápagos garúa season want more, and wetsuits are supplied.
