The ground

Nicoya's tropical dry forest is the rarer ecosystem — far less of it survives than rainforest, and it behaves completely differently. In the dry season the trees drop their leaves, the canopy opens up, and wildlife concentrates at the remaining water, which makes this the easiest place in Costa Rica to actually see animals.

The coast is a series of separated coves rather than a single strip: Santa Teresa and Mal País for surf, Montezuma's waterfalls, and the Cabo Blanco reserve at the tip. The country's first protected area, set aside in 1963, which is where the whole national park system started.

Bioluminescence in the mangrove estuaries near Paquera and Curú is real and genuinely striking on a moonless night, with the caveat that moon phase and recent rainfall decide it. We time departures to the new moon when it is a priority.

Shape of the days

A shape, not a script. Order and pacing move with weather, permits, and how the first days actually go.

  1. Days 1–2

    Arrival

    In via Liberia or Tambor, then to the southern peninsula. First dry-forest walk in the late afternoon when the howlers start.

  2. Days 3–5

    Cabo Blanco and the coves

    Cabo Blanco reserve trails to the ridge and down to the beach, Montezuma's waterfall chain, and empty coves reached on foot or by boat.

  3. Days 6–7

    Surf and estuary

    Santa Teresa sessions for those who want them, and a new-moon bioluminescence paddle in the mangrove estuary if conditions align.

  4. Day 8

    Exit

    Boat across the Gulf of Nicoya to Puntarenas, or fly from Tambor.

Conditions

Hot and dry in season, 26–35 °C, with strong Papagayo winds in December and January. November to May is the dry window; the green season from May makes the forest lush but the wildlife harder to find and some roads difficult.

Fitness bar

Easy. Short forest trails with some steep sections, beach walking, and optional surf. Cabo Blanco's trail to the beach and back is the biggest day and is comfortably manageable.

Best months

November through May. Time to the new moon if bioluminescence matters to you.

What to bring

Light layers for 30 °C-plus dry forest, a hat that stays on in the Papagayo wind, and shoes for both trail and beach. Reef-safe sunscreen. A head torch for the estuary paddle.

Access and permits

The constraints that actually decide whether a date is possible.

  • Cabo Blanco is an absolute nature reserve and closes to visitors on Mondays and Tuesdays, with limited trail access.
  • Peninsula roads are rough and river crossings can be seasonal even in the dry months. 4x4 is not optional here.

$5,400–8,200 for eight days covers private guiding, a 4x4 with driver on genuinely bad roads, and boutique coastal rooms. Nicoya has plenty of good budget and mid-range options; this is the private-guide, no-shuttle version.
