The ground
El Salvador's coast faces almost due south into the Southern Hemisphere swell window, which is why the season runs March to October. The same swells that light up Peru and Chile arrive here with warm water and no wetsuit.
The waves are right-hand point breaks over cobble and rock rather than beach breaks: Punta Roca at La Libertad is the serious one, long and fast; El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte are more forgiving and better for intermediates; the eastern points at Las Flores and Punta Mango are a separate trip further along the coast.
Honest trade-off: the swell season overlaps the rainy season from May onward. In practice that usually means clear glassy mornings and heavy afternoon cloudbursts, not washed-out days, but you should know it before you book, not after.

Days 1–2
San Salvador to La Libertad
Arrival, board and fitness assessment, and the first sessions at El Sunzal to read the reef.
Days 3–5
Points
Punta Roca on the right tide for advanced surfers, El Zonte and El Tunco otherwise, with dawn and late sessions and the middle of the day off.
Day 6
Coast and tide pools
Cliff paths, tide pools, and the fishing pier at La Libertad when the swell is too big to be useful.
Day 7
Exit
Final dawn session, then transfer to San Salvador.
Conditions
Water 27–29 °C, no wetsuit needed. Air 26–33 °C. March to October carries the south swell; May to October is the rainy season, typically with clear mornings and afternoon storms. Rip currents at the points are strong and constant.
Fitness bar
Easy to moderate on land; ocean-competent in the water. You should be able to swim 200 m comfortably in surf. Punta Roca is not a learner's wave and we will say so.
Best months
March through October for swell. March and April give swell with less rain; the shoulder months are quieter on the water.
Private or small group
Private surf guiding — one guide to two surfers maximum in the water — with boutique coastal lodging. Small-group departures up to six.
What to bring
No wetsuit needed in 28 °C water. Rash vest against sun and reef, reef booties for the cobble points, and zinc. Boards and leashes are on loan, so bring your own only if you are attached to it.
Access and permits
The constraints that actually decide whether a date is possible.
- Punta Roca is a localised, high-performance wave. We surf it with a local guide and expect you to respect the pecking order in the water.
- There is no lifeguard cover on most of this coast. Our guides carry rescue equipment and set the go or no-go call.

What the price reflects
$4,600–7,200 for seven days reflects private guiding at a two-to-one ratio, boutique lodging, and daily transport to whichever point is working. Hostel-and-shared-lesson surf weeks on this coast cost a fraction.
