What Panama is actually good at

The Pipeline Road in Soberanía National Park is one of the genuinely great birding corridors on earth. The Christmas Bird Count based here has set world single-day species records more than once, because a narrow isthmus concentrates two continents' avifauna into a strip of lowland forest. The counterpoint is strange and worth seeing: rainforest with Panamax freighters sliding through the Culebra Cut a few kilometres away.

Volcán Barú at 3,475 m is the country's high point, and on a genuinely clear morning you can see both oceans from the summit, though clear mornings are not common and the standard ascent is a midnight-to-dawn slog up a rough vehicle track. Boquete below it is geisha coffee country. And in the east, Darién: we run community-led river travel with Emberá hosts on permitted ground, and we do not and will not arrange a Gap crossing.

Access and permits

Country-level constraints that decide whether a date is possible.

  • The Darién Region carries a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory. Crossing the Gap is prohibited and hazardous, and no price makes it available. Emberá community tourism near Chagres, Emberá communities inside Darién province, and the Gap are three different things, and we are explicit about which one an itinerary touches.
  • Barro Colorado is a research station rather than a tourist site; visitor days are limited and allocated by the institute that runs it.
  • Dolphin watching in Bahía Almirante is regulated because of boat harassment. Our captains keep distance and cut engines.
  • Bastimentos marine park charges entry, and the Zapatilla cays have landing rules during turtle nesting.

Why one of these is not bookable

Darién Emberá Edge

  • The Darién Region carries a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory from the US State Department. Crossing the Gap is prohibited and hazardous.
  • Emberá community tourism near Chagres, Emberá communities inside Darién province, and the Gap itself are three different things. We are explicit about which one a given itinerary touches.

Combine Panama with a neighbour

Most private journeys cross a border — the Atacama to Uyuni crossing, Copán into Guatemala, Iguazú from both sides. Tell us the shape you want and we will say whether the logistics hold together.
