The ground

Roatán sits on the Mesoamerican reef with the drop-off unusually close to shore — at Mary's Place and West End Wall you are on a vertical face within minutes of leaving the dock. That geography is why the island became a diving centre and why shore diving here is genuinely good rather than a consolation.

The small stuff rewards patience: seahorses on the coral heads in the shallows, spotted drums under ledges, and the odd whale shark passing through on the deeper edges. Mangrove channels on the east end are a different world again, and best by kayak at first light.

Two honest notes. The Bay Islands sit in the hurricane belt, June to November. And the West End can get busy when cruise ships are in. We plan dives and shore time around the ship schedule, which is published.

Shape of the days

A shape, not a script. Order and pacing move with weather, permits, and how the first days actually go.

  1. Days 1–2

    Arrival and check dives

    Into Roatán, orientation, and shore or near-reef dives to sort weighting and trim.

  2. Days 3–5

    Walls

    Mary's Place, West End Wall, and the north-side sites; a night dive if conditions allow, and the Odyssey wreck for those with the certification.

  3. Day 6

    Mangroves and east end

    Kayak the mangrove channels at dawn, then the quieter east-end reef and a Garifuna community afternoon at Punta Gorda.

  4. Day 7

    Exit

    Final morning dive with the surface interval before flying, then departure.

Conditions

Water 26–29 °C year-round. Northern fronts from November to February can bring wind and swell that closes the north side for a day or two; seas are often calmest April to September. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Fitness bar

Easy. Open-water certification for the wall sites; advanced or Nitrox for the deeper walls and the wreck. Snorkelling covers the shallows.

Best months

Year-round diving. April to September is generally calmest; November to February brings cooler fronts but often better big-animal luck.

Private or small group

Private dive guide and boat, resort-based. Small-group departures up to eight divers.

What to bring

Certification card required. A 3 mm suit is enough and supplied; add a hood for the November-to-February fronts. Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest, and a light windproof for the boat back.

Access and permits

The constraints that actually decide whether a date is possible.

  • Roatán Marine Park charges a diver fee that funds patrols and mooring maintenance. It is included.
  • Lionfish culling is active here and briefings cover it. Cruise-ship days are published and we plan around them.

What the price reflects

$5,600–8,500 for seven days buys a private boat and guide rather than a shared six-pack slot, plus resort accommodation. Shared dive packages on the island cost substantially less and are perfectly good diving on someone else's schedule.
