The Andes run about 7,000 km, which means "the Andes" is not one place and does not behave like one. The Cordillera Blanca in Ancash carries more glaciated peaks above 5,500 m than anywhere else in the tropics. The Cordillera Real above La Paz is drier and colder. The Ecuadorian volcanoes are a chain of individual cones you can drive between in an afternoon. The Colombian cordilleras are wet, green, and rarely above 4,000 m. Grouping them by country tells you almost nothing; grouping them by what a day costs your body tells you a lot.
What they share is altitude, and altitude is the design constraint rather than a detail to manage on arrival. Above roughly 3,500 m, sleep gets worse, appetite drops, recovery slows, and any respiratory infection you brought with you gets harder. Above 5,000 m you are working at roughly half the oxygen of sea level. None of that is dangerous when it is planned for and all of it is when it is not, which is why every high itinerary here is built backwards from an acclimatisation profile rather than forwards from a list of sights.
The other shared feature is the diurnal swing. A valley at 4,000 m can sit at 18 °C in the sun and −6 °C before dawn on the same day. That is a packing problem, a hydration problem, and a morale problem, and it is why the good camps on these routes exist where they do — on grass benches with water and wind shelter, not at the most photogenic point on the map.
