What Bahamas is actually good at

The Exuma chain runs about 190 km and the water is genuinely the point — shallow banks that read a colour photographs struggle to hold, with sandbars that appear and vanish on the tide. The only sensible way to travel it is a crewed boat, because the chain has almost no infrastructure between the settlements.

The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, established in 1958, was the first marine protected area of its kind anywhere and has been a no-take reserve since 1986. That is why the grouper and conch inside it are what they are, and why the park functions as a nursery for the wider bank.

Access and permits

Country-level constraints that decide whether a date is possible.

  • The Land and Sea Park is a no-take zone throughout — no fishing, shelling, conch, or lobster anywhere inside its boundary. Moorings are booked and fees go to the Bahamas National Trust.
  • Several famous encounters in the chain — the nurse sharks at Compass Cay, the pigs at Big Major — are habituated and provisioned animals. We visit without adding to the feeding and say plainly which encounters are wild.

Most private journeys cross a border — the Atacama to Uyuni crossing, Copán into Guatemala, Iguazú from both sides. Tell us the shape you want and we will say whether the logistics hold together.
