La Soufrière on Basse-Terre is 1,467 m and the highest point in the Lesser Antilles, with a permanently steaming summit dome. You walk up through rainforest into a lunar zone of fumaroles, sulphur staining, and cracked lava, usually inside cloud, and the smell arrives before the view.
Basse-Terre's national park is genuinely wet — over 6,000 mm a year on the windward slopes — and the trail network reflects it. This is a French overseas department, which means euros, EU rules, very good food, and, usefully, proper mountain rescue. The coast is the counterpoint: black sand on the west, and the Réserve Cousteau off Malendure where reef and turtles sit ten minutes from the beach.
