The ground
This is mountaineering, not trekking. Huayna Potosí is 6,088 m, graded around PD on the normal route, and it involves roped glacier travel, crevasses, a bergschrund, and a steep summit slope. It gets described as 'the easiest 6,000er in the world' and that description has put people in trouble.
The Cordillera Real runs about 125 km north-east of La Paz with more than a dozen peaks above 5,500 m, and the acclimatisation objectives are excellent in their own right — Pico Austria at 5,320 m and the Condoriri group give you real summits before the main one.
Glacier retreat here is severe and route conditions change year to year. Chacaltaya, once a ski resort above La Paz, has lost its glacier entirely. What was a straightforward line five seasons ago may now involve more objective hazard, and our guides make that call in the field.
Shape of the days
A shape, not a script. Order and pacing move with weather, permits, and how the first days actually go.
Days 1–2
La Paz acclimatisation
Arrival at 3,600 m, deliberate rest, and a graded walk on the Muela del Diablo or the valley rim.
Days 3–5
Condoriri
Base camp at Laguna Chiar Khota, a glacier skills day, and Pico Austria at 5,320 m as a genuine acclimatisation summit.
Days 6–7
Huayna Potosí
High camp at 5,200–5,600 m, then an alpine start for the summit — roughly six hours to 6,088 m on rope, crampons, and axe.
Day 8
Descent and exit
Down to the roadhead and back to La Paz.
Conditions
Cold and dry in season. High camps well below freezing with strong wind; summit day starts around 1 a.m. and finishes early because the snow deteriorates as the sun works on it. May to September is the settled window.
Fitness bar
Challenging and technical. Prior glacier experience is strongly preferred — rope work, crampon technique, self-arrest. We include a skills day, but this is not a first mountain, and we will say so if your experience does not support the objective. Altitude medication is a conversation with your own doctor; we do not prescribe.
Best months
May through September. June to August is driest and coldest.
Private or small group
Private, guided one-to-one or one-to-two on glacier terrain. No large groups above the snow line.
What to bring
All technical hardware is supplied, including plastic or hybrid boots. Bring warm base and mid layers, a hard shell, expedition mitts, a balaclava, and glacier glasses for a 1 a.m. start at 5,200 m. Mountaineering and rescue insurance is mandatory.
Access and permits
The constraints that actually decide whether a date is possible.
- Route conditions on Huayna Potosí change with glacier retreat. Some seasons the bergschrund or the summit ridge is materially harder than the grade suggests, and the guide's call is final.
- Very cheap two-day Huayna Potosí packages are widely sold in La Paz. They compress acclimatisation into nothing and the turn-around rate reflects that.
Included
- UIAGM/IFMGA-affiliated or senior local guides at one-to-one or one-to-two on summit day
- All technical equipment — boots, crampons, axe, harness, rope, helmet
- Refuge and high-camp accommodation, porters to high camp
- La Paz hotel nights, all transfers, and a glacier skills day
Not included
- Any summit guarantee
- High-altitude mountaineering and rescue insurance, which is mandatory
- International flights
- Illimani, which is a separate and harder objective
What the price reflects
$5,800–8,800 for eight days covers low-ratio certified guiding, a full acclimatisation programme with a genuine 5,300 m summit, all technical kit, and porters to high camp. Budget La Paz packages cost a tenth of that and skip the acclimatisation entirely.
Bands are per person sharing and move with party size, season, and lodge choice. Nothing is confirmed until it is confirmed in writing. How we price.
